What Are Blood Clots?

Blood clots are semi-solid, gel-like masses formed when cells, platelets (tiny blood cells that help with blood clotting), and proteins clump together. Blood clots help prevent excessive bleeding when you're cut or injured.

When blood clots are in the stool, it's a sign of bleeding somewhere in your gastrointestinal (GI) tract. 

Specifically, a blood clot in the stool means the blood that's being lost in your GI tract had time to coagulate (change from a liquid to a semi-solid state) and form a clump.
